Sherborne Castle

Sherborne Castle was originally built by Roger Bishop of Salisbury as part of his diocese in the 12th century. The castle was acquired in 1592 by Sir Walter Raleigh who added a new house in the deer park. Thereafter, in 1617, diplomat Sir John Digby added four wings to the castle which gave it the present square look. It was only in 1969 that the castle was opened for public viewing and has since brought in thousands of visitors from different places in the world. Until now, the castle is owned by the Wingfield Digby family who opened it up to the public. You can easily go to the Sherborne Castle if you are staying at the Dorset holiday cottages. Maiden Castle

Another interesting castle that is easily accessible from the Dorset holiday cottages is the Maiden Castle. It is located in Dorchester and dates back to as early as 600 BC. Maiden Castle is considered as the biggest Iron Age fort in the United Kingdom. The area where it was built on was the ruins of a Neolithic settlement. Over the years, it has taken on shape after defences and extensions were built surrounding it. There were hundreds of people who lived in the castle from 800 BC to 43 AD but in 43 AD, however, the Romans took control of the castle.
