Enjoying a Day Out at the Museums of Devon

When you and your family are out on your Devon holidays, you can include some of the interesting museums in Devon. There are many museums you can visit especially if you are staying at the Devon holiday cottages. Other popular tourist attractions are located very near the Devon holiday cottages too. It is always best to book at these cottages during your Devon holidays since they are furnished with modern amenities that provide the best accommodations for big or small groups of visitors. Here are some of the museums that are near the Devon holiday cottages which you must enjoy during your Devon holidays.

Tiverton Museum

One of the largest collections of items in South West England can be found at the Tiverton Museum which has a total of 14 galleries. There are many unique and interesting items featured in the museum. Although located in Tiverton, it is still very accessible for visitors from the Devon holiday cottages. The major exhibit area is the Exhibition Hall. This area is available for those who may want to lease the hall for exhibitions. There are some interesting permanent objects in the Exhibition Hall, though. There is the staircase from the Brampton House and some items that are exhibited near the staircase which were those that were recovered from the 1961 R.A.F crash. There is also the barrel piano which you can ask the museum attendant to demonstrate for you.

The Auther’s Gallery is named in honour of the museum’s third curator, William P. Auther’s. He was a politician who worked hard to establish this museum. Here at this gallery you will see “The Tiny Bumper” locomotive No. 1442 owned by the Great Western Railway. This engine is best known to be the one that pulled the last train to Tiverton. The Museum Trust, which runs the museum, bought the engine courtesy of the grant that was given to the museum by Viscount Amory. There are also other interesting things in the gallery such as different railway objects and a mini bicycle. Spend at least a day of your Devon holidays just to explore the many exhibits in the Tiverton Museum.

Royal Albert Memorial Museum & Art Gallery

One of the museums that you must visit during your Devon holidays is the Royal Albert Memorial Museum & Art Gallery. There are a lot of interesting objects such as archaeological finds, natural history objects, world cultures, fine and decorative art. The archaeology section has some interesting exhibit of prehistoric finds that are more than 500,000 years old. The natural history section features some of the largest and tallest land mammals. A collection of international significance can be found at the ethnographic section. The museum reflects the rich culture of the place and it is guaranteed to make your Devon holidays even more enjoyable especially when combined with a stay at the Devon holiday cottages.
